There is no single answer — every Grand Prix runs a different number of laps. Formula 1 fixes the race distance in kilometres rather than laps: a race covers the fewest complete laps needed to exceed 305 km. A short circuit therefore needs more laps than a long one.

Lap counts are derived from race results in the OpenF1 data for 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026: a race is only ever shortened, never extended, so the longest running of a race at a given circuit is its scheduled distance. Circuits marked TBC have no championship Grand Prix on record yet.

Why the lap count changes at every circuit

The rule is simple arithmetic. Take the minimum race distance of 305 km, divide it by the length of one lap, and round up to the next whole lap. Spa-Francorchamps is the longest track on the calendar at just over 7 km, so it clears 305 km in 44 laps. The Hungaroring is barely 4.3 km, so it needs 70.

Monaco is the one deliberate exception. Its street circuit is both the slowest and the shortest on the calendar, and the race runs to a reduced distance of about 260 km rather than 305 km. Even so, the lap is short enough that Monaco still has the highest lap count of the season at 78.

When a race finishes short of its scheduled distance
